Winona Nava to be awarded The Herb Wegner Outstanding Achievement Award

The National Credit Union Foundation announced today that Winona Nava, President/CEO of Guadalupe Credit Union, will be awarded the 2023 Herb Wegner Memorial Award for Outstanding Individual Achievement along with three additional credit union leaders from across the nation.

The Herb Wegner awards are the credit union movement’s highest national honors, as they celebrate individuals and programs that put the belief into action. Their achievements fulfill the mission of promoting financial freedom for millions of people around the world.

“The Herb Wegner Memorial Awards are a symbol of human service,” said Gigi Hyland, executive director of the Foundation. “Collectively, these four individuals have dedicated almost 150 years to the credit union movement.

Winona has over 44 years of experience working with New Mexico credit unions. Under Nava’s leadership, GCU has made a commitment to the community and enabled many Northern New Mexicans achieve financial security and prosperity.

“Ms. Nava is the first New Mexican to win this award, and we could not be prouder or more excited about this selection”, said Juan E. Fernández Ceballos, President/CEO of the Credit Union Association of New Mexico (CUANM).” Her deeds have been noticed not only in the national credit union movement, but at the local level, helping to move the needle, reign in predatory lending, and provide safe and reliable services to our immigrant community.”

It is the first time since 2018 that four individuals will receive a Herb Wegner Memorial Award. The winners will be celebrated at the Foundation Dinner on February 27, 2023, held in conjunction with the Credit Union National Association’s (CUNA) Governmental Affairs Conference in Washington, D.C.
