GCU to Close on Juneteenth
In continuing our journey into diversity, equity and inclusion, Guadalupe Credit Union will be closing branches this year in honor and celebration of Juneteenth, on Monday, June 20th.
On Juneteenth, we commemorate the anniversary of the emancipation of the enslaved African Americans back in 1865. Back on January 1st, 1863, then President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation outlawing slavery in the original confederate states. On June 19th, 1865, Union Army general Gordon Granger under the General Order No. 3 enforced the freedom of enslaved people in the last held out state in the confederacy, Texas. President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law on June 17, 2021.
